Billie Joe Billie's most famous guitar was given to him as a present when he was 11 years old. It is a Fernandes Stratocaster copy, with a Seymour Duncan humbucker pickup. Though it is called 'Blue'-because of its colour!-over the years Billie has customized it with various stickers. 'Blue' was used on all Green Day's earlier albums, but it's fingerboard is nearly worn out and it's been re-fretted many times, so it's in semi-retirement now. Billie also owns Fender custom shop guitars which are built to Blue's specifications, and a guitar he calls 'Frankenstein' because it's made up of various Fender parts. On 'Nimrod' he used a selection of Gibson guitars-Les Paul, ES-355 and ES-135, and also a fender Jaguar. On the 'Warning' albumm, he needed a more diverse range of sounds and used yet more different guitars. A Gibson ES-135, late '50s Les Paul jr, '59 Les Paul Special all fitted with P-90 pickups for the 'strummy stuff', also a '68 Fender Telecaaster. On 'Waiting' he used an '80s Les paul and on 'Warning' (the song) a Fender Jazzmaster. He uses two acoustic guitars-on 'Warning' and 'Hold On' a Taylor 514C and on 'Macy's Day Parade' and 'Misery' a Guild D-30. When playing live recently he has also used a '57 Les Paul TV jr from the songs from 'Warning' and 'Nimrod', but for the earlier songs he has used hos old faithful 'Blue'. Billi Joe's amps on 'Warning' are described by his guitar technician Bill Schneider in an interview with www.guitarplayer.com : "All of the half-clean/ half-dirty tones are a mix of Billie's reissue 100-watt Marshall Super Lead (with a Bob Bradshaw gain mod) and a blackface '64 Fender Bassman head". A Hiwatt Custom 100 through a 4x12 Marshall is used on songs like 'Deadbeat Holiday', a '50s Gibson GA-30 combo was used for all the lead breaks and a Line 6 Flextone for tremolo tones.
