Influences and Inspiration
As we all know, Green Day are the kings of the new punk scene, but whose crowns did they borrow along the way? It's well known that they were influenced by the Ramones and the Clash, but did you know that Billie Joe, Mike & Tré may have been listening to these the day before they wrote those songs...? 'Macy's Day Parade' - John Lennon's cover of 'Stand By Me' 'Waiting' - 'Downtown' by Petula Clark 'Misery' - Billie Joe claims this sounds like it could be in Disney's 'Aladdin', but it sounds rather like a song called Misery in a kids' animated movie called 'The Pebble and the Penguin'! 'Warning' - 'Know Your Rights' by the Clash begins "This is a public service announcement" 'Church On Sunday' - 'Oliver's Army' by Elvis Costello 'Jackass' - the intro is very similar to 'Dandy' by the Kinks 'Uptight' - 'Dreaming' by Blondie 'Hitchin' a Ride' - 'Stray Cat Strut' by the Stray Cats 'Ha Ha You're Dead' and 'Tight Wad Hill' - 'Accidents Never Happen' by Blondie 'Don't Leave Me' and '16' - 'All Day And All Of The NIght' by the Kinks or 'Submission' by the Sex Pistols
Billie Joe's harmonica riffs - similar to those by Bob Dylan and the Beatles
